DE STIJL: MEMBERS

The De Stijl movement in the Netherlands arose during the time of the First World War as the Netherlands was a neutral country. Since Paris was war-ridden, the center for art life in Europe changed and countries such as the Netherlands and Switzerland became safe havens for artists and artistic life. As such, it was during the First World War that Theo van Doesburg, the main propagandist for De Stijl came into contact with the majority of the founding members of the group.

Van Doesburg firsts corresponds with Mondrian and meets Vantongerloo in 1915. 1916, however, is the year when all of the major members of the group meet or are in correspondence with each other: Van der Leck meets Van Doesburg, Mondrian, and Vilmos Huzar. Van Doesburg meets J.J.P, Oud and Jan Wils. Robert van't Hoff meets van Doesburg and J.J.P. Oud. Rietveld, however joins in 1918 and leaves in 1928.
